Menzel tells the story, based on a Bohumil Hrabal novel, of a young railwayman with an unmanageable love life. One of the most fondly remembered Czech comedies of the 1960s, it is set during WW2 in occupied Czechslovakia. “The triumph of the film is to show us that our petty destinies are inextricably linked to bigger events outside our lives and that we can never escape them.” Derek Malcom, The Guardian.
