4th June 2013 newsletter

First, some excellent news: we have a new treasurer. As you may recall, Caroline Harben told us some time ago that she would be standing down from this role with effect from early June. We announced the vacancy and our member Jeff Karoly duly stepped forward to offer his services. The committee formally confirmed his appointment (technically, co-opted him) at its last meeting, so Jeff is now in post. We are very grateful both to him for helping out in this way, but also to Caroline for looking after our finances so well over the last year and for ensuring a smooth handover to Jeff.

Secondly a reminder of our event this Saturday:

Saturday June 8th THE BAND WAGON and indoor picnic. The film, (dir. Vincente Minnelli, 108 minutes, Cert. U) stars Fred Astaire and Cyd Charisse in their prime. “… 1953 musical comedy film that many critics rank, along with Singin’ in the Rain as the finest of the MGM musicals, although it was only a modest box-office success. It tells the story of an aging musical star who hopes a Broadway play will restart his career. However, the play’s director wants to make it a pretentious retelling of Faust and brings in a prima ballerina who clashes with the star” – Wikipedia. Lots of brilliant songs and wonderful dance routines.

Season 2013-14 – the programme is in the final stages of development, following the recent useful and productive members’ meeting. We plan to distribute the annual brochure with all the details early in September. A date for your diary: The first screening will be on October 3rd.

We are not quite sure when the next newsletter will appear, but probably in late August or early September. Have a good summer, but don’t blink or you will miss it.
