Jane Austen
For our end of year screening, we present Love and Friendship, Whit Stillman’s 2016 adaptation of one of Jane Austen’s minor works, the short novella Lady Susan. Written as a series of letters between the coquettish and manipulative Lady Susan Vernon, members of her family and circle of friends, the language and mores of early 19th century life among a privileged stratum of English society are brought vividly to life. Stillman [himself an accomplished screenwriter] uses Austen’s delightfully amusing text as the essential core of his screenplay and allies it to his imaginative visual interpretation of the characters, gleaned from their style of letter writing.
Thought to have been written as an untitled fair copy manuscript in 1805, Austen’s novella was finally named Lady Susan and published [privately] in 1871, 54 years after her death at the age of forty one.
The screening will be charged at our usual rate of £7.00, which includes £1.00 membership fee.
