Future of ABCD Film Society
Following our previous announcements, we finally had a meeting yesterday with representatives of the Town Council [who now hold the lease on the management of the Guildhall, separately from Abbey Cinema]. and came to a working arrangement with them covering the equipment/screen setting-up process and preparation of the Roysse Room for our monthly screenings. They have assured us that everything will be in place for Thursday’s film [in two days’ time], despite being limited to office hours in which to do what’s necessary, as well as being unable to provide assistance [if needed] when we arrive at 6.30pm to complete the pre-screening set-up. This arrangement falls short of what we had hoped for but, in the circumstances, was the best we could get from them.
The change in the Guildhall leasing arrangements and the consequences thereof have been lengthy in the extreme but, pace the caveat described above, at least we now seem to be looking at a more assured future for the Society-the long delay in bringing you this news being none of our making!
Note: For security reasons newly instituted by the Town Council, access to the Roysse Room is now only via the Bridge Street entrance.
October Film
Released in 1962, our October presentation is Michelangelo Antonioni’s L’Eclisse, starring Alain Delon and Monica Vitti. Concluding his informal trilogy on the modern malaise-beginning with L’Avventura [1960] and followed by La Notte [1961]-L’Eclisse tells the story of a young woman who leaves one lover only to drift into an uncertain relationship with another. Using the classic architecture of Rome as backdrop to the couple’s doomed affair, Antonioni reaches the apotheosis of his modernist style, returning to his favourite themes-alienation and the difficulty of finding personal connections in an increasingly estranged world.
The screening will be charged at our new rate of £8.00, which includes £1.00 membership fee.
